Details

"The British Residency at Hyderabad" Medium: Engraving on Paper Size: 4 7/8 n x 7 1/8 n Capt. Robert Melville Grindlay was the founder of Grindlays Bank. From the age of 17 to 34 he was in the Military Service of East India Company till his retirement from Bombay Native Infantry. During the time he was in military service (1804-1820), Grindlay travelled across the length and breadth of India. Grindlay was said to possess an infinite love for India’s landscapes. He was a self-taught artist and during his short military service in India, Grindlay produced a large body of drawings and sketches of life and landscapes he came across. After returning to England, Grindlay compiled his opulent works and published them as 'Scenery, Costumes and Architecture chiefly on the Western Side of India', a book highly sought after by collectors. Some of the breathtaking drawings depict Bombay, Hyderabad and Gujarat; mountains of the Western Ghats; Hindu temples, ancient caves, tombs and fortresses. The drawing “The British Residency at Hyderabad” was done by Grindlay in 1813 and was later engraved by William Miller with special permission from Grindlay for the book ‘View in India, China and on the shores of the Red Sea’ (1836).
