Works a few years before Raza left to teach in the United States (circa 1960), offers early evidence of the transformation that was soon to mark his ‘Abstractionist’ oeuvre.
In this portrayal of a lone Indian temple on a densely wooded hillside, Raza uses freer brushstrokes and a more expressive palette to convey the scene and emotions it inspired in him. Through its hot orange sky, and autumnal colors, coming down the slop, this painting gives away a very spontaneous and raw energy.
