Paul Raj, hailed from Kodaikanal, and obtained formal education from Government School of Arts, Madras (Chennai). Paul Raj was a recipient of various awards, including the Mysore State Award from the Maharaja. Paul Raj was a dextrous artist popular for his awe inspiring water colours. He was an avid traveller with observant eyes. Whatever he saw during his travels; be it scenes from villages, Gulmohar trees, Banyan tress, busy market places, bullock carts, et al, his masterly skills beautifully laid his subject on paper. He always believed that there was no ugly thing in life. For him, form of the object was always made beautiful by light, shade and perspective. His works are in important collections world over.
